Introduction
Thermoplastic polyurethane combines flexibility, abrasion resistance, and toughness, which makes it popular for cable jackets, hoses, films, and footwear. TPU is also easy to ignite, so many applications require flame retardancy. MCA for TPU flame retardant systems give a halogen-free route to fire performance in these soft, flexible materials.
In TPU, melamine cyanurate acts mainly through endothermic decomposition and the release of nitrogen-rich gases, which cool the burning surface and dilute combustible vapors. MCA is commonly combined with a phosphorus based flame retardant to improve char formation and reach demanding ratings. Fine particles are important here, because coarse MCA can reduce elongation, tear strength, and surface smoothness in thin parts.
TPU is typically processed at 170 to 220°C, well below the decomposition onset of MCA, so thermal stability is not a concern. Moisture control is: both TPU and additives should be dried before processing.
