Microencapsulated Ammonium Polyphosphate
-- Steady & Reliable Manufacturer --
Introduction
Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is among the most widely used halogen-free flame retardants, acting as the acid source in intumescent systems. Standard APP can be hygroscopic and may migrate or release ammonia under heat and humidity. Microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate addresses this by coating each APP particle with a thin protective shell.
We start with crystalline phase II APP, which has a long polymer chain and low inherent water solubility, then encapsulate the particles with a resin based shell. The shell further reduces water absorption and solubility, improves thermal stability, and makes the powder easier to blend into polymers and coatings. In a fire, the shell breaks down and the APP core releases phosphoric acid, driving the char formation that protects the substrate.
Microencapsulated grades are typically combined with a carbon source such as pentaerythritol and a blowing agent such as melamine to form a complete intumescent system.

Application
Microencapsulated APP is used where phosphorus based flame retardancy must be combined with moisture resistance and good compatibility.
- Polypropylene and polyethylene: Intumescent flame-retardant compounds for sheets, profiles, and molded parts.
- Intumescent coatings: Fire-protective paints for steel, wood, and decorative surfaces.
- Epoxy and unsaturated polyester: Laminates, potting compounds, and FRP components.
- Polyurethane systems: Foams, elastomers, and sealants requiring halogen-free protection.
- Cable and wire compounds: EVA and polyolefin based jackets and fillers.
Advantages
- Reduced water sensitivity: The protective shell lowers moisture uptake and water extraction, important in humid or outdoor environments.
- Improved thermal stability: Higher resistance to degradation during compounding, supporting a wider processing window.
- Better polymer compatibility: Coated surfaces blend more easily into polyolefins and resins, with less viscosity increase.
- Low migration: Less surface bloom and leaching over the life of the product.
- Halogen-free: Supports low-smoke, non-corrosive fire performance.
