Melamine-Coated Ammonium Polyphosphate
-- Steady & Reliable Manufacturer --
Introduction
Uncoated ammonium polyphosphate performs well as a flame retardant but can be sensitive to moisture and can interact with other additives in the formulation. Melamine-coated ammonium polyphosphate places a melamine based layer on the surface of each APP particle, creating a more stable and more compatible powder for demanding polymer and coating systems.
Melamine is a natural partner for APP, since it acts as a gas source in intumescent chemistry. Placing it directly at the particle surface improves compatibility with resin matrices, reduces water solubility, and cuts down on moisture pick-up during storage and processing. The result is a free-flowing powder that disperses easily and keeps its performance through compounding.
Our melamine-coated grades are made from phase II APP with a high degree of polymerization, selected for good heat resistance and low solubility.

Application
Melamine-coated APP is chosen when the formulation benefits from added nitrogen at the particle surface and lower moisture sensitivity.
- Polyolefins: PP, PE, and EVA compounds for profiles, sheets, and cable materials.
- Epoxy resin systems: Coatings, laminates, and electronic encapsulation.
- Intumescent paints: Water-based and solvent-based coatings for steel and wood.
- Polyurethane foams and sealants: Fire-rated foams, adhesives, and joint fillers.
- Rubber and elastomer compounds: General-purpose halogen-free flame retardant additive.
Advantages
- Built-in synergy: Melamine at the particle surface supports gas generation and char expansion in intumescent systems.
- Lower moisture sensitivity: Reduced water absorption and extraction help in humid climates and long storage.
- Easy dispersion: Free-flowing, less dusty powder that blends more evenly into polymers and resins.
- Stable processing: Good heat resistance during compounding, with less risk of premature acid release.
- Halogen-free: Suitable for low-smoke, non-corrosive formulations.
